Beginner’s Guide to Packers: What is a packer and what is it for?

Have you heard of the term packer or packing dildo before but you're not sure what it is? Well, we're about to tell you. A packer is a usually phallic-shaped object worn beneath your clothes to give you the appearance of having a penis.
There are a lot of reasons why someone might wear a packer. Packing is commonly practised by trans men or non-binary folks as a form of gender affirmation. But they are also popular with drag kings and gender non-conforming folks. But anyone who wants to can use a packing dildo.
What is a Packer?
Packers are penis-shaped objects that are worn beneath clothes to create a bulge in someone’s pants to replicate the look and feel of a penis. Packing dildos are commonly made of soft materials like silicone, TPE and cyberskin. These are designed to feel as close to the feel of a flaccid dildo as possible. But there are also packers made from firmer silicone which can be used for penetration too. The firmer the material, the more obvious the bulge will be.
Types of Packers: Soft Packers
Soft packing is the most common kind of packing - it involves wearing a soft (again usually phallic) shaped packer which gives the appearance of a penis. The packer is limp and cannot be used for penetrative sex, though you can have fun bumping and grinding! They come in all shapes, sizes and skin colours.
Some packers are really large and others are small. It's up to you to choose what you most feel comfortable wearing. There's no right or wrong - just what feels best for you. But what your packer is made of matters. Silicone is easily washable and non-porous which means it's durable. You should always wash your packer after wearing it.
If your packer is made of Cyberskin, TPR or TPE it’s porous so it might not last as long - and you'll have to be very careful cleaning it. It’s a good idea to avoid sharing your packer with others if it’s made of a porous material as it can’t be sterilised.

Types of Packers: Packing Dildo
Hard packers are firm and can be used for penetration. They're usually silicone. These are usually called "packing dildos" or "pack and play". These are more in line with standard dildos as they tend to be firm and hold their shape. They can be used under clothing for an obvious bulge and during sex. In many cases, these are worn closer to sexual encounters rather than for day-to-day wear as they create the look of an erection.
Read the instructions on any product you're looking to buy carefully - to make sure you know if it's a dildo you can use for penetration or whether it's a limp packer.

Types of Packers: STP Packer
STP stands for “stand to pee”. STP packers have an internal funnel and a whole at the end so that the wearer can urinate while the packer is worn. These are often used by those who have not had bottom surgery. They allow people with a vulva to pee standing up helping to ease gender dysphoria and making bathroom trips a more comfortable experience.
This type of packer can be more difficult to get used to, so I suggest practising in the shower first in case there is any leakage.

Packing Underwear
To use any type of packer, it's best to wear packing underwear or packing shorts. Packer boxer briefs come in all shapes and sizes, just like packers do. You're guaranteed to find one that fits your needs. They're very easy to use. Slip on the boxers, insert your packer or dildo, and you are ready to go. Most packer briefs are stretchy and made from soft cotton or spandex. They need to have a supportive, extra-wide waistband to keep them securely in place.
The packing underwear will have an internal pocket and strap to secure your packer in place. Usually, this will be an O-ring.
